Local Leads Captain Karen Garner, states that she has listened intently to her providers of counties including Polk, Howard, Sevier, Montgomery, and Little River. She listened and she did much research to see what device would be BEST for children and providers if a choking incident occurs at the center. Mrs.Garner contacted our Community Health Nurse Leigh Garner and together the search was on. The choking device LifeVac, was proven to be safe and a way to assist if there is an incidence of a child or adult choking at the center. Garner stated that every provider had to complete training on the use of the LifeVac device and receive a certificate before receiving the device. Those who received the device were excited to have this device on hand if ever an incident arises. Garner states that "Local Leads does provide CPR training to providers. This is always the best practice; however, the LifeVac device is great to have. Garner states that she appreciates her providers always wanting what is best for the children and going above and beyond to ensure each child has a safe, fun, educational place to thrive as they develop.

On National STEM Day, we honor J. Frank Scott, the founding director of DMESC and the visionary for whom the J. Frank Scott STEM Center proudly stands. Long before “STEM” became a buzzword, Scott pioneered hands-on learning, teacher support, and community partnerships that still power our work today. Under his leadership, our teachers gained access to innovative tools, professional learning, and student opportunities that made science, technology, engineering, and mathematics feel possible for every learner. The J. Frank Scott STEM Center continues this legacy every day—sparking curiosity and elevating teacher practice. Today, we celebrate J. Frank Scott’s enduring impact—and the future it made possible.
